Lima, March 18, 2026.- As part of proEXPLO 2026, organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP), the field trip “Tectonics and Basin Architecture: Structural Controls for Mineral Deposit Exploration in the Morococha-La Oroya District” will take place from May 8 to 10, 2026, along the Lima-San Mateo-La Oroya-Lima route.

Over three days, participants will visit some of the most representative geological settings of the Central Andes of Peru, covering the northern sector of the Mesozoic back-arc basin, the synorogenic sequences associated with the La Chonta lineament, and the Permian-Triassic basin exposed in the Yauli Dome. Through guided technical stops, the structural and sedimentary evolution of the region will be analyzed, from Eocene-Miocene carbonate and volcaniclastic units to the Permian-Triassic Mitu and Pucará groups.

Field Geology

The program will allow participants to examine in the field the key tectono-sedimentary relationships required to reconstruct the regional tectonic evolution, as well as to assess Andean deformation at the boundaries of the Permian-Triassic basin and within the affected Mesozoic and volcaniclastic units. It will also cover thin-skinned and thick-skinned structural styles, interpreting their exploration implications and integrating key observations within the geological setting of Morococha.

The field trip will be led by Alejandro Amilibia, geoscientist, co-founder and technical director of Terractiva, PhD from the University of Barcelona and specialist in tectonics and geodynamics with more than 18 years of international experience; and Frederic Escosa, structural geologist at Terractiva, with over a decade of experience in salt tectonics and structural analysis, and a background as a postdoctoral researcher at TotalEnergies.

Registration Open

The activity is aimed at geologists, geoscientists, exploration and mining professionals, as well as advanced students and researchers interested in applied geology. Registration will remain open until April 30, 2026. For more information, please contact viajesproexplo@iimp.org.pe or reach out via WhatsApp at: (+51) 95129434 or  (+51) 955750108.
