Exploration Portfolio could Double to 150 Projects
Walter Tejada, president of proEXPLO 2025, states that Peru has the geological conditions to substantially increase the portfolio of exploration projects.
Lima, September 25, 2024. The president of the 14th International Congress of Prospectors and Explorers - proEXPLO 2025, Walter Tejada, expressed his optimism that the current portfolio of 75 exploration projects could double to 150 if the government, companies and communities work together to promote mining investment. This was stated in an exclusive interview with the program Diálogos Mineros of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP).
He stated that, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mines regarding exploration projects that are already in the execution stage, compared to last year, it shows a positive trend. Why? In 2023, the execution was around 22% of the portfolio, while today, one year later, the execution is at 39%.
“This is a positive step forward that should be celebrated, but I think there is much more we can do. Peru's exploration portfolio currently has 75 projects and they are moving into the drilling phase, and that is what the ministry is focusing on. In my opinion, we could easily have 100 or 150 projects in that portfolio,” he commented on the IIMP program.
Under this premise, such country goal could be achieved in a joint work of the Executive, the companies and the communities surrounding the deposit. “Peru has the geological conditions for this portfolio to grow substantially through policies that promote exploration,” said the head of proEXPLO 2025.
