The time between identifying a project and initiating drilling should be two years
Walter Tejada, president of proEXPLO 2025, indicated that one of the government's challenges is to deal with red tape, as it undermines our country's competitiveness.
Lima, October 10, 2024. The president of the 14th International Congress of Prospectors and Explorers - proEXPLO 2025, Walter Tejada, considered that it should take a maximum of 2 years between identifying a mining project and starting to drill for exploration and not up to 4 years, as is currently the case. This was stated in an exclusive interview with the program Diálogos Mineros of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP).
He argued that although those 4 years are not exclusively for permits, but also include phases such as community relations, the period is longer than the international average, which is 2 years at the most. He said that unfortunately, for this reason, our country is less competitive in its intention to attract more investments.
“In the end, I think what we should be aiming for is that the critical paths of the projects, that is, from the identification of certain indications until the drilling, should be done in the span of 1 or 2 years, which would be ideal. In neighboring countries permits can be for 1 month or up to 6 months, in other countries they are 8 months. So, in Peru it could be 1 or 2 years because these are complex and costly processes,” he noted in the IIMP program.
Under this premise, he said that one of the pending challenges of the Government is to deal with the paperwork, which, although it could improve with the implementation of the Ventanilla Única Digital, there are still no concrete results.
Finally, Tejada pointed out that the world's largest companies are currently exploring in Peru. He added that these are companies that use state-of-the-art technology for this task.
