Walter Tejada: Number of Junior Companies Exploring in the Country is Decreasing
proEXPLO 2025's President stated that the trend in the last 10 years shows a reduction in the number of these companies due to the increase in the number of permits required for them to start up activities.
Lima, December 27, 2024. The president of the 14th International Congress of Prospectors and Explorers - proEXPLO 2025, Walter Tejada, states that there are fewer junior companies exploring in the country due to the increase in the number of permits required by State bodies. This was stated during an interview with Diálogos Mineros, a program of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP).
“We need junior companies and I think we have a pending task there. I remember that in the nineties, when I started my career, there were a lot of junior companies working in the country, which is normal worldwide. Juniors are companies that, due to their agility and their appetite for technical risk, generate discoveries and activity. In Peru, in the last 10 years, we have seen a sustained reduction of junior companies that have been present in the country,” he noted.
Under this premise, the Engineer pointed out that one of the main reasons for the decreasing number of this type of companies is the complex paperwork that exists in our country. Tejada noted that, at present, it takes up to 2 years for a company to start exploration activities alone.
“Junior companies as part of their business model need to advance their projects quickly. However, the conditions in the country for projects to advance with agility are complicated at the moment," he said in the IIMP program.
