Lima, February 3, 2025. The Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) invites geologists, explorers and professionals from the mining sector to participate in the specialized course “Distal footprints of carbonate-hosted hydrothermal deposits: theory and practical exploration tools”, given by the renowned Dr. Shaun Barker, within the framework of the International Congress of Prospectors and Explorers - proEXPLO 2025.

Carbonate rocks play a key role as hosts for various types of mineral deposits, including porphyry-skarn, carbonate replacement deposits, Carlin-type gold, Pb-Zn-Ag SEDEX and Mississippi-Valley. However, their high reactivity makes it difficult to identify obvious alteration footprints. This course will provide attendees with key tools to recognize and analyze these alterations through the use of outcrops, hand samples, ultraviolet fluorescence, lithogeochemistry and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes.

During the session, case studies will be presented and interactive exercises will be developed to integrate different datasets and improve the explorers' ability to identify structures and lithological features.

The course will be held at the IIMP headquarters, in the district of La Molina, on Saturday, May 3, from 09:00 to 17:00 hours. The course will be in English, with simultaneous interpretation into Spanish and includes a digital certificate at the end of the session.

About the speaker

The course will be given by Dr. Shaun Barker, director of the Mineral Deposit Research Unit of the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. The speaker has a strong background in geochemistry, mineralogy and structural geology.

In addition, he has participated in multiple research projects and worked in several gold and copper deposits, contributing with innovative methods in mining exploration.
